Letterforms, Space & Decolonisation
Letterforms, Space & Decolonisation
Contemporary spaces like Colombo and greater Sri Lanka were deeply shaped by European colonial rule. A parallel history exists within typography: the way we use akuru (letters), our purposes for writing, and even the digital fonts we use all bear the scars of a colonial break. Just as we navigate physical spaces, we inhabit language. We use our alphabet not just for passive communication, but as an active tool to keep up with shifts in society, knowledge, and technology through continuous redesign, reproduction, and redefinition. Far from just inheriting a language, people actively reinvent it for modern needs. This session will explore the historic colonial fractures in typography and the contemporary movement to decolonise akuru. Please note that this talk will be primarily in Sinhala, but English-speaking audience members are also welcome. Professor Nihal Perera is a leading scholar of Colombo and Asian urbanism, widely recognised for his contributions to “post-colonial urbanism.
