Pottery (Mati)

Pottery (Mati)

Pottery has been an essential part of Sri Lankan life for thousands of years, dating back to the time of ancient kings. Step into the world of traditional Sri Lankan pottery (Mati) with Miss Nalini and her husband, who have mastered this craft for over 60 years in their home in Kumbalgama, a village with a long history of pottery-making. You will see the preparing of raw clay to shaping it on the wheel and sun-drying the pieces before firing. You will get to play with making pottery and take home a piece of this living tradition that Miss Nalini has made. Please note that the pieces you make take about 3-4 weeks to fire and burn. Hence why we offer a pottery piece made by Miss Nalini!
